Pensioners and disabled people will soon be able to get cheaper coach fares in a scheme similar to the concessions they already get on buses.

Under a new Government scheme, coach companies agreeing to offer half-fare concessions will get a grant to cover their costs.

The scheme covers journeys across England and Wales and National Express, the biggest operator of scheduled services across the country, have already said they will be taking part.

The news has already been given the thumbs up by Southend's Labour group, which believes the benefits of the scheme will be felt across the borough.

Reg Copley, Labour councillor for St Lukes ward, said: "This is very good news for pensioners and disabled people across Southend. Many have family or friends living some way away, so visiting can be expensive."
