A south Essex man has been rewarded for his efforts with young people deemed to be at risk with a prestigious award.
Andy Rothan, Thurrock Explorer Scouts' district commissioner, was presented with the High Sheriff of Essex Award at a lavish ceremony last week.
Andy, of Chadwell Road, Grays, qualified for the prize after taking a group of people deemed to be at risk - including many from Grays School and the Ockendon Centre - on an adventure weekend at Skreens Park near Chelmsford.
The trip was part of the work the 49-year-old carries out for the community in trying to eradicate crime and social disorder.
There, those involved took part in abseiling, climbing and canoeing.
Andy said: "It was nice to be able to give these youngsters a break away from it all so that they could relax and have some fun."
The award also took into account Andy's ability to "motivate" Brentwood-based motor company Ford into sending a number of volunteers along to help look after the group.
