A man needed hospital treatment after he was attacked twice by a group of people in Chelmsford on Friday night.
The 49-year-old civil servant was leaving the Red Lion pub in Springfield Road at about 11.30pm, when he was assaulted by eight to 10 people.
DC Clive Emmett said the man was trying to walk around the group, when comments were made to him and he was then struck from behind.
"He fell to the ground and the attack began outside the pub. He then got up and started walking away, but when he got to the post office in Springfield Road, the second attack began. It appears to be an unprovoked attack," he said
The Chelmsford man was taken to Broomfield Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured cheekbone, grazes to the forehead, a black eye, swelling to the eye and other eye injuries.
DC Emmett added: "The man has still got to go back to hospital and is obviously very upset by the assault. There was a group of people sitting on a table outside the pub not associated with the people who attacked the man and we are keen to speak to them, anyone driving past who saw anything, or anyone else who saw what happened."
He said that people could contact him at Chelmsford CID on 01245 491212 or through Crimestoppers, anonymously,on 0800 555111
