The family of a paraglider who went missing in India a year ago will be gathering today to celebrate his life.
Brightlingsea chef Joel Kitchen was last seen on April 7 last year in northern India.
He had set off to go paragliding from Eir in the northern province of Himachal Pradesh.
His parents Bill and Angie had to pledge £18,000 to the Indian authorities before they would start a search.
They also travelled out to India to help look for their son.
Mr Kitchen, who teaches at Brightlingsea Junior School, said: "It has been uncomfortable and strange trying to accept the reality that Joel's not returning.
"We have had enormous support from friends, family and the local community.
"There is an empty feeling inside us, but spring is coming round and seeing the smiles on the faces of children and the leaves coming out on the trees, you see that life goes on."
Joel had been travelling with his girlfriend Lucy Wallace, who co-ordinated the search. After setting off paragliding, he failed to reach his touchdown site at Daram Shala and did not make a routine safety call to friends saying he had arrived.
The family, including Joel's brothers Christopher, 24, and Ben, 20, will be joined by Lucy Wallace for a quite time of reflection today to celebrate Joel's life.
They are also planning to set up an adventure play facility in Brightlingsea Junior School in memory of their son
