Thousands of children across Essex got an extra day off school today due to the snow.
Mike Barnett, education spokesman for Essex County Council, said it was the worst situation schools had faced for more than a decade.
"The overall picture is that we have 200 schools closed, which represents one-in-three across the county," he said.
"The worst hit area is the west but it has affected schools across the whole of Essex."
And icy conditions are expected to keep us freezing this weekend with snow showers predicted to continue.
But Evening Gazette weatherman Terry Mayes predicts the weather will change and temperatures pick up by two or three degrees.
Mr Mayes said: "Temperatures could drop to -2 or -4 centigrade with ice on Saturday."
More snow was predicted for tonight.
