Witham resident Bill Coleman has died at the age of 92.
He was a keen sportsman who helped restore Witham Cricket Club after the Second World War. He also enjoyed hockey, golf and shooting.
He became captain of the cricket club and Maldon Golf Club and continued playing golf into his 70s.
As a member of Easterford Freemasons' Lodge, Bill helped raise record sums for Masonic charities and became Worshipful Master of the lodge in 1960.
He also served as treasurer and several other committee posts of the Abbeyfield Society at Poplar Hall, Witham.
Bill met Witham resident Marjorie Brown when she appeared in a concert near his home and they married at St Nicolas' Church, Witham, in 1935.
They settled in the town, living at Collingwood House and later at houses in Avenue Road.
Their daughter, Lynette, was born in 1937. The family now includes three grandchildren and seven great-grand-children.
Apart from sport, his interests included crosswords. He was also a trustee of Witham Park.
Marjorie died in 1995. After Bill suffered a fall, he moved in 2000 to St Dominic's Residential Home in London Road, Kelvedon, where he died.
