More than 100 passengers were delayed for more than two hours after a train broke down on on its way to Colchester.
Rail users were left stranded on Chelmsford viaduct as the rescue locomotive set out to make repairs.
An Anglia Railways spokesman said the 1.30pm service from London Liverpool Street to Norwich didn't arrive at Colchester until 4.30pm.
He said: "The breakdown didn't cause delays to any other service. There was no impact on other trains. The reason for the delay was it took that long for the rescue locomotive to come from Ipswich."
He added: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers by the delay who are entitled to a full refund for the journey. They can call the customer relations office in Ipswich."
