A buoyant Canvey business today revealed expansion plans and the creation of new jobs.

Terry Croarkin runs South East Marine, his own boatbuilding firm, from the former Prout factory, in Point Road.

He had to move the business to the 6,000 sq ft factory after finding his old workshop in Great Wakering too small to cater for all the orders they were receiving.

Mr Croarkin, said: "We are taking things nice and slowly and trying not to rush things, but if business continues to boom like it has been then we could need up to ten more experienced boatbuilders by the end of the year.

"There are a lot of orders for boats coming in and so we could even need to start taking on a few staff in the next month or so."

Mr Croarkin said he had been welcomed by the boatbuilding community on Canvey - there are two other firms, the Dauntless Boatyard and CBN Marine.

He added he was delighted to bring boatbuilding back to The Point, which has not seen any since Prout Catamarans closed in January last year.

South East Marine is focusing on building small boats around 16ft to 27ft that will cost between £5,000 to £35,000 and will be sold to agents across Europe.
