Traders and councillors today hailed a £500,000 Government handout to ease traffic and parking in one of Southend's shopping centres.
Hamlet Court Road, in Westcliff, won the cash for a series of projects to improve the layout for motorists, cyclists, delivery drivers and pedestrians.
The road once known as the Bond Street of Southend has been blighted over the last 20 years by shop closures and a general decline.
However, it has seen a major resurgence over the past three years with restaurants and other businesses opening up.
Roger Weaver, cabinet member in charge of planning, said: "It is fantastic news that the bid has been approved as it will help give a boost to an area which is a focal point for business, commerce and the community.
"It's an added bonus because the bid has earned praise from Department for Transport.
"That shows that when we come to this kind of scheme, we are taking the right approach and working hand in hand with our community partners every step of the way."
Cabinet member in charge of regeneration, David Garston, said: "I am delighted monies have been awarded to Hamlet Court Road."
Nigel Haven, of Havens department store, a central and long-standing business in Hamlet Court Road, said: "It is great news and gives us the leg up we need to achieve the full regeneration of this important shopping street."
