Colchester Zoo hosted a meeting for all UK zoos which have African and Asian elephants.
Managers and keepers from all over the country visited the zoo for the get-together, which was was chaired by Colchester Zoo curator Anthony Tropeano.
Mr Tropeano has been involved in the consultative process of the world's first management for the welfare of elephants in zoos, introduced by the Federation of Zoos.
Best practice in aspects of elephant welfare, such as nutrition, breeding, training and keeper safety, are included in the guidelines.
The current political situation, with animal welfare groups lobbying MPs about elephants being kept in captivity, was also discussed at the meeting
