The number of shoplifters being caught in Braintree is at an all-time high thanks to a crime-busting radio link.

Since it was launched three years ago, the radio link system has been going from strength-to-strength helping shopkeepers in Braintree town centre fight back against thieves.

The system even claimed another victory last weekend.

PC Tina Smith, of Braintree police, explained that on Saturday the radio link system helped catch two teenage girls who had stolen a number of items from shops all over the town.

Thanks to the vigilance and sharp eyes of the shopkeepers, the girls were caught and arrested and the stolen goods were recovered.

PC Smith said: "The system was set up for the prevention and detection of crime and to enable shops to keep in touch with each other and alert each other when one has a problem."

The radio system was paid for by the traders and is supported by Braintree police and the George Yard shopping centre.
