Maldon looks set to get another takeaway restaurant - but it is facing strong opposition from other fast food outlets in the town.

About ten of the 22 outlets have signed a petition against the proposed pizza and pasta store, which has been sent to Maldon District Council.

The main reason for objection is that there are already a large number of takeaways in Maldon and many are "struggling to pay their rent and council tax".

It has also been claimed if another one opens up, others will be forced to shut down.

The site, at 169 High Street, is currently a vacant shop with a vacant flat above. The applicant wants to change the ground floor into a pizza and pasta takeaway.

The proposal would provide two full-time and two part-time jobs, with the proposed hours of use being 4pm until 11.30pm Monday to Saturday and 4pm until 10pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

Maldon Town Council has also objected to the plans, but the environmental health department is satisfied the proposals will meet its standards.

Members of the central area planning committee will discuss the application on Thursday and have been recommended to approve it.
