The Essex closed squash and racketball competition is being held at Basildon's Club Kingswood this weekend.

The tournament attracted 130 players at the preliminary stage, but the action hots up for real tomorrow with competitors battling it out for a place in one of Sunday's 11 grand finals.

Last year's winners, Peter Barker and Lauren Briggs - who are both in the England and World squash rankings - will be defending their titles at the Sparrows Herne venue.

The competition is sponsored by Southend's RS Partnerships, Racket Link in Basildon and Caernsport Ltd of Sittingbourne, which funds the competition and prizes, plus inter-county team expenses.

This is the 60th event going back to the 1940's and some of the players from those early days are still participating.

Two examples are Barbara Sanderson, a World masters championship competitor in Australia last year, and Brian Hardcastle, who has lifted the Essex over-55's crown for the last couple of seasons.
