Joe Royle today blamed 'purely financial reasons' for his surprise decision to offload Martijn Reuser.
The Dutch midfielder has been told he can leave Portman Road on a free transfer - the fourth player dealt that news in 24 hours.
As part of the Blues' cost-cutting drive, Reuser has been made available along with former reserve-team skipper Justin Miller, Lee Beevers and Steve Burton.
And, reflecting on his decision to release fans' favourite Reuser, Royle told the Gazette: "This is purely a financial decision and part of our ongoing pruning process.
"Martijn has had injury problems this season and in that time others have jumped above him in the pecking order. People like Darren Bent and Darren Ambrose.
"He is also one of the highest earners at the club so, unfortunately, he has become something of an expensive luxury.
"I don't think the news came as a complete surprise to Martijn.
"He took it very professionally and I'm sure things will work out for him. We wish him all the best."
