A labourer hanged himself at a house he was working on in Spain, an inquest heard.
Lindsey Sage, 27, of King George's Avenue, Dovercourt, had been abroad for about four months, living with his father, Alan, in Alicante.
But the hearing was told that he moved out three days before his death to live in the property where he was working.
His father said Mr Sage called by to collect some clothes and money and said: "Send my body back to England."
He told the inquest that his son had suffered from depression since he was a teenager and had personal problems during the previous year.
However, he did not think he meant the comment at the time.
He later became concerned about Mr Sage and asked a friend to call round and he was discovered hanging from a ceiling beam. He tried to resuscitate him but realised he was dead.
Essex coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray recorded a verdict of suicide.
