In a move to jog people's memories on crime, Essex Police have begun using similar tactics to those used for road accidents.
A yellow board detailing the significant details of an accident is put up at the scene, appealing for information - and this week saw the introduction of crime information boards, which are being used in the same way.
They can be deployed for any crime where there is reason to believe that passers-by may have information which will assist the investigation.
Chelmsford crime reduction officer Kathy Payne said: "They are not directed at drivers in passing traffic. They are positioned to draw the attention of pedestrians to a crime which they might have witnessed or have information about.
"The boards will be set up in residential areas for 10 days."
