A police crackdown on gangs of youths hanging around Chelmsford town centre has been deemed a success.

Three youths were arrested for minor public order offences out of the 20 stop checks that took place between 7pm and 10pm on Saturday night, and police are now warning youngsters that letters will be sent to their parents if they were stopped that evening.

Sgt Jo Byrne said that one sergeant and six officers from Chelmsford Police took part in the unnamed operation.

"Over the last three weeks there has been about 20 to 30 youths just hanging about. They have not got a lot to do and they are getting themselves into disorderly conduct, and people also find them quite intimidating. We managed to get about 20 stop checks done and three arrests for minor public order offences were made. The age of the group was between 14 and 18," she said.

Sgt Byrne added: "The message to parents is to say we will be sending letters out to them of how their child was stopped on Saturday night and advising them of their child's whereabouts."
