One of Essex's finest views has been saved by councillors. Maldon District Council's north western area planning committee refused to approve plans to put a telecommunications mast up at a site in Great Totham.
The proposed 20m mast would have been put up on land owned by Anglian Water in Hall Road.
Objectors said the view from Beacon Hill known throughout Essex as one of the best in the country would have been snatched away had the plans been approved.
From the top of the hill people can see across fields and woods down to the Blackwater Estuary, Osea Island, and on a clear day as far as the north Kent coast.
Councillors were recommended to approve the application, by phone giant Orange, but decided to go with public opinion.
