Southend United boss Rob Newman was left purring with delight after his side put on an accomplished display to beat Third Division promotion hopefuls Oxford 2-1 at Roots Hall last night.

Goals in each half from the Seasiders' strike force of Mark Rawle and Tes Bramble cemented a hat-trick of league wins for Blues, who climbed to 12th place in the table, just two points behind the play-offs.

And not even a late goal for sixth-placed Oxford from striker Steve Basham could dampen Newman's jubilant mood.

"It was a good performance and a comfortable win," said the Shrimpers chief. "Oxford have had some very good results recently, but we never looked like letting them get another one against us.

"They have their own style of play where they defend in strong numbers, but I didn't think they could live with our power and purpose.

"Anybody that has watched this game will agree we were worthy winners from start to finish.

"The application was spot on from my players and I'm really pleased to see them chalk up three successive victories."

But Newman said his players were still disappointed to have conceded a goal -- their first for 327 minutes.

"The boys at the back are gutted to have let in a late goal when we have defended different class all night," he added.
