The resumption of the Printwize Hockey League after the Christmas break brought mixed fortunes for Southend.
The men's first team took part in an eight-goal thriller against local rivals Old Southendian.
The Old Boys took an early two-goal lead after defensive errors allowed them through before Dave Robeson showed his class with an exquisite lob into the top right-hand corner.
At times Southend dominated, but they were again caught napping by Old Boys Dave Coleman, who cut the mustard with a fine individual effort.
Robeson pulled the seasiders back into it with a penalty flick, but this was wiped out straight from the restart by a well-worked penalty corner.
Again Southend fought back and Keith Arnold gave them renewed hope by tickling a stray ball over from inches out. However, it was all in vain as Southendian got even for a defeat at the start of the season by running out 5-3 winners.
The second string showed no signs of defensive leaks as they comnprehensively beat Waltham Forest 3-0.
