A couple in their 50s have sold their bungalow to emigrate to the bitter cold of the old Soviet Union to help look after street children.
Len Joy, 53, and his wife, Pat, 53, of Eastbrooks, Pitsea - who has never been abroad - are to make a huge leap of faith and move to the Ukraine to work in an orphanage.
The Christian pair are so determined to go there and stay, perhaps indefinitely, they are becoming Ukrainian citizens.
Mr Joy said: "If we can only go out there and help four or five children then it will have been worth it."
Mrs Joy will help with administration at the home in the capital, Kiev, while her husband does DIY on the building.
