Witham's old fire station is back on the market after a deal to buy it fell through.
The Guithavon Street building had been offered for sale on a sealed bid basis by Braintree Council, which is selling off surplus land and buildings.
A buyer was found but the deal collapsed.
Sue Thurston, Braintree Council's estates manager, said as a result of the site going back on the market she would be contacting the other bidders and inviting new bids.
She said: "We had quite a lot of interest so we shall be putting a for sale board on it."
The old fire station is not listed but a buyer would probably need planning permission to use the site for anything other than storage.
The building served as Witham's second fire station between the 1840s and 1940s. Since then, it has been used for storage by successive councils.
