Shadow Defence Secretary Bernard Jenkin today launched a bitter attack on fire union leaders.

He has called on the Government to ask the Attorney General to outlaw the strike in the run-up to potential war with Iraq.

Soldiers from Colchester-based 3 Para are to take part in action against Iraq, along with the Colchester-based 16 Air Assault Brigade.

But today the Paras will be fighting another battle as they provide cover in the latest one-day strike by firefighters.

North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin said he was appalled 3 Para were still on firefighting duties when they could be training or preparing to leave.

He said: "The Government has it within its power to apply for an injunction to ban this strike. We know that the fire cover is interrupting front line training of units that are going to go and fight a war."

Mr Jenkin said: "many, many firefighters" were great people but it was an "entirely shameful strike".

He described them as "lions led by donkeys" and the FBU as a "bunch of idiots" and a "disgrace" to their country.

Mr Jenkin added: "I don't think many people have any idea what a huge fiasco this is causing in the armed forces."

The Fire Brigades' Union (FBU) hit back at Mr Jenkin's comments.

FBU leader Andy Gilchrist called on Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith to demand that Mr Jenkin withdraw his remarks and apologise - or be sacked.

The union pointed out that many firefighters were ex-servicemen and women who had served their country in conflicts, including in the Gulf.

"They will be disgusted. These were the typical comments of someone sitting safe in Whitehall," said a union spokesman.
