Skipper Scott Fitzgerald today promised Colchester United's fans he will 'battle on defiantly' after the U's dropped into the Division Two's bottom four.
Fitzgerald told the Evening Gazette: "There's still a lot of games and a lot of points to play for.
"We've fought our way out of trouble before and we'll fight our way out again.
"If we continue to put teams under the same kind of pressure as we put Wigan under on Saturday then nothing will prevent us from climbing up the table.
"I'm certainly not worried about our position yet."
The U's first fell into the relegation zone in mid-October last year and fought back gamely to go as high as mid-table.
But a combination of defensive errors and continued missed scoring chances has landed the club right back in trouble again.
And it was exactly that combination that cost them heavily in the 2-1 defeat at runaway leaders Wigan's JJB Stadium.
Fitzgerald said: "I'm so disappointed because our game plan was working perfectly.
"We set out to frustrate Wigan and make life very difficult for them and for most of the game they couldn't find a way through us.
"We should have been two goals up before bad marking allowed Jason de Vos to head Wigan in front on the stroke of half-time."
