Patients at Basildon Hospital's mental health unit welcomed a VIP to the wards.
The High Sheriff of Essex David Boyle dropped in at South Essex Partnership NHS Trust, spending the day taking part in an extensive tour of wards at both Basildon and Runwell Hospital to see mental health services in action and gain a greater insight into mental health issues.

Mr Boyle and wife Angela were met by Jai Tout, chairman of the South Essex Partnership NHS Trust, and members of staff on the wards of the mental health unit.
Mrs Tout said: "We enjoyed showing him the excellent services we provide for both patients in our hospitals and in the community. His visit is a great honour."
