The first stage of an £482,000 refurbishment scheme for an elderly housing complex has been launched.

The upgrade at the Lavers, in Hockley Road, Rayleigh, will see its 17 bedsits transformed into 12 new one-bedroom flats.

The project is the biggest such makeover undertaken by Rochford Council since 1996 when financial problems halted a programme to upgrade sheltered accommodation schemes.

Most residents have temporarily moved into nearby schemes as the work, expected to take 18 weeks, is done.

Council leader Peter Webster said: "I'm delighted it has started.

"The recommencement of this major refurbishment project underlines the importance for us of providing good accommodation for the elderly."

Spa Court in Hockley and Britton Court, Rayleigh, will also be refurbished.
