Thousands of new homes could be built in south Essex as part of the massive Thames Gateway regeneration project.

The 15,000 extra homes would come from expanding both Southend and Basildon with new properties as well as the various other projects included in the Thames Gateway.

Following a cabinet committee meeting, Prime Minister Tony Blair called for no effort to be spared in furthering the multibillion-pound proposals.

Mr Blair has called for reports to be drawn up by the treasury department within a month to kick start the plans which could lead to 200,000 new houses, roads, schools, health centres and other community facilities.

David Garston, Southend's executive councillor for regeneration and economic development said: "We can only welcome this but we will have to see what effect it will have on the town."

South Essex was included late in the Thames Gateway proposals and Southend is seen as the cultural and educational centre of the area.

Southend town clerk George Krawiec said: "It is important that local councils such as Southend take an active part in the continuing development of Thames Gateway South Essex."
