Campaigners opposed to a major traffic scheme in Southend have held a weekend of vigils to kick-start a month of intensive campaigning.

Parklife, who are against the widening of Priory Crescent, targeted the offices of the town's MPs with placards to raise awareness of their battle.

The group also dished out yellow ribbons to drivers waiting in traffic near Priory Park, which they say is under threat because of the project.

More than £8million has already been splashed out on the controversial scheme by Southend Council with millions more still needed to complete the project.

The protesters' first vigil was held outside the surgery of Southend West MP David Amess in Iveagh Hall, Leigh.

Then around 50 protesters held a vigil outside the surgery of Rochford and Southend East MP Sir Teddy Taylor in Southchurch Road.

The MPs were given an eight-page document outlining the group's views on the environmental impact and lack of consultation.

Parklife campaigner Shaun Qureshi said: "We have fought for 18 months and people are beginning to realise we are not going away - as long as there's a chance that our campaign will succeed we will continue to fight."
