Motorists using a road between Braintree and Halstead faced delays at peak times as urgent repair work was done to the road surface.

Temporary traffic lights were set up at the busy Foley Corner junction at High Garrett, where the road forks in one direction to Gosfield, another to Halstead and a third to Braintree.

Highways officers are repairing a problem with drainage on the road. The surface around drain covers had become cracked.

The misery for motorists began on Wednesday as the permanent traffic lights were disabled and temporary ones installed.

At rush hour times, queues stretched back in the Braintree direction to the bypass roundabout.

But the work was due to be completed by this afternoon

A spokesman for Essex County Council highways department, said: "Essex County Council apologises for the tailbacks while the work is completed, which should be done at the latest by 4.30pm."
