Former Arsenal, West Ham and Coventry City midfielder Stewart Robson will be unveiled as Southend United's new first team coach today.

Blues owner Ron Martin has brought in the 38-year-old as part of his threatened overhaul of the football staff at Roots Hall, with Robson signing a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The former England under-21 captain will watch tomorrow's home match against Rochdale, before meeting the players for the first time at training on Monday.

And Robson, who spent seven years at Wimbledon as youth, reserve team and head coach, can't wait to start.

"I'm really looking forward to the new challenge," he said. "I've always been an innovative person and I want to help improve Southend and get them pushing back up the table again.

"I have a wealth of coaching experience and believe I have the qualities to make an impact here.

"When I was at Wimbledon I introduced a lot of improvements, which included scrapping the long ball tactic they were renowned for, and when I left they were one of the most pleasing teams on the eye to watch.

"I also like to instil discipline in the players and I would say I am a fair, but hard sort of person."
