A bus driver was left badly shaken after a youth pointed a gun at his bus in South Woodham Ferrers.
The incident happened on Friday night at around 11.30pm as four youths crossed Ferrers Road at the junction with Inchbonnie Road.
One of the boys produced what appeared to be a pistol from his pocket and pointed it at the bus, causing the driver to brake sharply.
Steve Smith, general manager of First Bus, which operates the number 36 bus, said: "Unsurprisingly the driver was quite badly shaken, especially when he realised what could have happened.
"We are cooperating fully with police and hope they catch the culprit."
Sgt Graeme Dowsett said: "We are dealing with this as a serious incident. The bus driver was left shocked and frightened.
The youth is described as being between 16 and 18 and around five feet five inches tall.
He is of medium to large build with short dark hair and was wearing a dark hooded parka-style jacket and dark baggy trousers.
If anyone saw the incident is asked to call South Woodham police on 01245 320333.
