The story of one of the British Army's worst military defeats and another of courage in the face of overwhelming odds are featured in an exhibition which opens at Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre on Sunday.

The Zulu Wars display covers the disastrous battle of Isandlwana where Zulu warriors over-ran a military camp, killing 1,800 British and native troops.

It also features the famous battle of Rorke's Drift, where 140 British soldiers fought off repeated attacks by 4,000 Zulu warriors.

This battle, for which 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded, was brought to public attention in 1963 by the blockbusting film Zulu, which starred Michael Caine.

The exhibition at the centre in Centurion Way will feature photographs, uniforms and weapons used by both sides during the conflict and stills from the film.

A video will also be screened telling the story of the Zulu wars.

The exhibition will be open every Sunday until February 23, between 10am and 3pm. For further information call 01708 523409.
