Work to supply the first gas network to two villages will start within weeks.
E S Pipelines is to begin the project in St Osyth and Point Clear this month, and most of the homes will be connected by the end of the year.
It will cost £390 per property. Michael Talbot, chairman of St Osyth Parish Council, said the move would be welcomed by residents.
"In virtually every survey we have carried out, people have called for a gas supply to be laid on," he said.
"At the moment, no-one in Point Clear is connected to mains gas and only a few homes in the village."
Mr Talbot said the possibility of a scheme had been brought up about 18 months ago and villagers had been waiting for the final details.
Express Pipe Laying and Repairs has been been appointed contractor for the work and will be responsible for carrying out the installation of the mains and services.
