Families wanting to enjoy a walk in Wat Tyler Park, Pitsea, during the summer could have to pay for the privilege.
Basildon Council is considering introducing a £1 parking charge during the busy summer months.
Labour leader Nigel Smith is appalled at the idea. He said: "It is an unnecessary charge, a stealth tax on people who want to enjoy the park. They pay for it through their council tax."
