Council tax payers in Maldon may not be facing a 22 per cent rise this year after all.
The council tax proposal to be discussed by members of Maldon District Council's finance and corporate services committee is set to be less than first thought.
A council spokesman said that at the meeting the committee would be looking at a tax of £121.50p for a band D home in the coming year.
It means an increase of £13.50, 12 per cent, from the amount being paid last year but it is still lower than the 22 per cent hinted at in October when the budgeting process began.
John Smith, chairman of the committee, said: "Since the original projection was made, officers have looked further into the need for improvements to the Marine Lake in Promenade Park.
"It has been necessary to ensure we have sufficient reserves to enable a scheme to go ahead during 2003/04."
The committee will make its recommendation to the full council, which will debate the matter on February 13.
