Battery chickens have been given a new lease of life - thanks to animal lovers.
Saved - Jackie Kendall hugs one of the hens Picture: ROBIN WOOSEY
Jackie Kendall of New Waverley Road, Noak Bridge, has made it her mission to rescue chickens from around the county and she even has some as pets.
After an appeal in the Evening Echo, Jackie raised enough cash to buy 25 chickens from a battery farm and give them a new home at the Rescuers' Wildlife Sanctuary in Benfleet.
Jackie said: "These chickens were just a couple of days away from the slaughterhouse. They have finished their egg producing year, but they still have plenty of life in them."
