The troubled Castle Point golf course could soon be leased out in a bid to turn around its fortunes, a leading councillor told today.
Castle Point Council, which owns the complex in Canvey, has already lost an estimated £3,000 in income from green fees and council officers are determined to rake back some of the cash.
This is due to the course being closed since December 22 because the land is water-logged brought about by persistent rainfall.
Dave Blackwell, the council's lead member for sport, leisure and conservation, said that if the wet weather continues until the end of the month and into February the figure could actually be a lot higher.
He said that for the net income for the golf course in January 2002 was £10,900, which equates to a daily green fee income of £351.
Therefore it could be argued that if the golf course remains closed for the whole of January then the council will lose out on more than £10,000.
Mr Blackwell said: "At the next full council meeting we will be discussing the option of leasing out the golf course to a professional company that will be able improve and invest in it."
The council took over the course in Somnes Avenue in June 2001, injecting £167,000 of public money in a bid to turn its finances around.
