They say that laughter is the best medicine and Colchester patients will be able to enjoy all the fun of the theatre without leaving their beds.
Hospital Radio Colchester is to broadcast a performance of the Mercury's panto Dick Whittington live to patients via the headsets beside their beds at Colchester General and Essex County hospitals.
Secretary Andy Patrick said: "It's more than ten years since we have broadcast from the theatre."
But in a recent survey patients said they would like to hear local performances while in hospital. It is hoped the broadcasts will become a regular part of the service for patients.
The show will be recorded live at the theatre in Balkerne Gate, and will be fed back to the hospital radio studio at the Wilson Marriage Centre, in Barrack Street, from where it will be broadcast to up to 700 patients.
The Mercury's chief executive Dee Evans said: "We are delighted that through Hospital Radio Colchester we are able to share the pantomime with those who are unable to join us at the Mercury Theatre."
