A row over car parking has not been solved despite plans being approved which would offer spaces.

Permission was given last night to build homes behind Braintree's Bradford Street and provide parking for residents of Friars Lane.

Consent was granted at a Braintree Council area committee, attended by members of Friars Lane Action Group, for three terraced and one detached house to go up behind 39 Bradford Street.

The plans, submitted by Bowergrange Estates, also include eight parking spaces for the four new homes plus a minimum of seven extra spaces for Friars Lane residents to rent or buy

Bradford Street and Friars Lane residents are campaigning for parking space because the council is selling a former depot site at Friars Lane, where some residents park.

But secretary of Friars Lane Action Group (FLAG), Nikki Townsend , today said the minimum of seven spaces would not be enough to solve residents' parking problems.

And she said extra cars from residents of the new houses would cause more congestion in Friars Lane.

At the meeting a planning officer said the developer was not obliged to offer the extra parking.
