A bigger and better car park fee refund scheme is being planned in Braintree to coincide with a hike in charges.

Braintree Council has agreed increases across the board at its car parks to come into force in the summer.

No definite date has been set but when the rise comes into effect it is hoped a little-used existing scheme will be extended and improved.

It is run as a partnership between traders and the council and entitles shoppers to a refund on their first hour of parking if they spend more than £5 with a trader belonging to the scheme.

The hope is that many more traders will come on board for the relaunch and that some will be offering bigger incentives.

Brenda Baker, manager of the George Yard Shopping Centre in the town, said: "We are looking for more traders to join us and the indications are that lots of them will."

Shoppers visiting short stay car parks will face an increase in charges between 10p and £1.

Charges in long stay car parks will double from £150 to £300 a year and White Horse Lane car park in Witham, favoured by commuters, will see a hike in charges from £2 to £3 for up to 23 hours.
