Plans have been put forward to establish an evening bus service to help Witham youngsters get to leisure facilities at Braintree Freeport.

The move comes after fresh calls for a bus service to a new cinema and leisure complex at Freeport were voiced by district councillor Phil Hughes.

It is hoped the route would link Witham, Cressing, Silver End and Rivenhall with Freeport.

Mr Hughes said: "This would be aimed particularly at providing a service for young people to get to and from the new leisure facilities at Braintree, including the recently opened cinema."

Councillor Hughes is working with Silver End Parish Council to secure a bus service and has recently submitted a local budget proposal to Braintree Council.

Lyn Green, Braintree Council executive member for community needs, backed the need for a late bus service for Freeport.

Mrs Green said: "I think the way forward is to speak with Freeport and see if there is some way we could joint-fund a service from towns and villages in the area."

Meanwhile plans for the service have been backed by several Witham town councillors.

During last night's town council meeting the councillors agreed to meet with members of Silver End Parish Council to discuss the idea.
