Two visitors who offered an elderly Colchester resident £50 for two statues may have been bogus callers.
Police are hunting a man and a woman who called at a flat in sheltered accommodation in Old Heath Road, Colchester.
They told the resident they were from the council and offered her £50 for two horse statues she had, which she refused.
But detectives believe that while they were there, the pair searched her home for cash, although they did not find any.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said: "We don't think they were particularly interested in buying the horse statues."
Anyone with information about the incident should call Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
