The search is on for a main charity to benefit from a popular seaside carnival's golden celebrations.

Clacton Carnival reaches its 50th anniversary this summer and organisers are hoping to make it the biggest and best yet.

They are now looking for a group or organisation to be the beneficiary of their fundraising efforts from the procession on August 9.

Press officer Nicola Freeman said the successful applicant was likely to net in the region of £4,000 towards a major project.

"We are searching for a locally-based charity or organisation that is in need of the money to spend within the local community and benefit as many people as possible," she said.

Last year's carnival saw record takings and more than £14,500 in donations was handed over to a total of 36 charities.

The two main beneficiaries were Clacton RNLI and Tendring Community Transport (TCT), which scooped £3,000 each.

The RNLI used the cash towards its new boathouse and TCT put the windfall into the running costs of its vehicles.

Applicants wanting to be considered as a benificiary should write to Judith Bradfield, 40 Crome Road, Clacton, by February 21. Anyone wanting more information on the carnival, should contact Mrs Freeman on 01255 426262
