Steve Whitton said today 'only time and results' will determine if he is to remain Colchester United's manager.

Talking exclusively to the Evening Gazette amid speculation surrounding his future, the unshakable and level-headed U's boss insisted: "If I'm not good enough, or not doing my job properly getting the sack is always a risk.

"It goes with the job and it's part of the territory I took on. I don't view it any differently today.

"It's been the same story since the day I first took over.

"We've been everybody's relegation favourites every year and as manager I've always been under pressure to win games.

"There's no magic formula to make anything work. All I can do is keep giving the job 100 per cent. I can't change what I do.

"That's always easier said than done, but the buck stops with me. So if it is me out of step any decision about my future will be made for me."

Poor Layer Road crowds this season - the worst in the Second Division - and a disappointing run of eight home games without a win, have put Whitton under the severest of pressures since he took over the reins from former team boss Mick Wadsworth almost four years ago.
