Hundreds of mourners turned out to pay an emotional tribute to former Castle Point mayor Peggy Grant.
Friends, family and former colleagues packed into St Nicholas Church, in Long Road, Canvey, to remember her life.
Mrs Grant, of Handel Road, Canvey, was the borough's mayor from 1994 to 1995 but since she retired from the council seven years ago she had worked tirelessly for others.
She was chairman of the Castle Point Volunteer Scheme and the Volunteer Bureau. She also worked for the Access group for the Disabled and was co-ordinator of the Castle Point Car Scheme which she worked on three days a week.
Castle Point MP Bob Spink, Liz Brett the deputy leader of the council, and councillor Pam Challis were among the mourners.
Edna Bowden, a close friend and former councillor for Canvey West, said the service had been a "fitting tribute to a popular woman".
