A series of crashes forced police to close a lane of the A12.

At about 5.30am today there were three two-vehicle crashes, then a fourth crash involving just one car on the London-bound side of the busy road.

They happened on a short stretch of the A12 near Silver End, said police.

Although no-one was injured, the crashes caused traffic disruption as the road was cleared.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said the second, third and fourth collisions may have happened as drivers were braking to avoid the first.

There was heavy congestion on the A120 today as drivers tried to find alternative routes.
