Hats, scarves and gloves had to be worn indoors as well as outside, as avid film viewers at Basildon's Uci cinema had to watch their chosen film in freezing conditions.

Crowds poured in to the cinema on the festival leisure park on Friday night to see one of the first screenings of Gangs of New York.

But instead of sitting back in their chairs they were wrapped up in winter coats, because of a problem with the air-conditioning.
