One of Brentwood's architectural treasures, rescued from collapse in the 1990s, has picked up a top heritage accolade.

Council chiefs are delighted by the news that grade II listed Hutton Poplars Hall has picked up a silver award in the Queen's Golden Jubilee Green Apple Heritage Awards for the Built Environment.

And they are quick to point out that the beautifully restored Edwardian building is now available for weddings!

Head of Architectural Services, Phil Blower, said: "It was great to rescue a building of this kind of architectural significance.

"When we took it over it was on the point of collapse and was being supported by a forest of scaffolding.

"It is excellent to receive this award as it encourages people to reacquaint themselves with a magnificent building."

The Green Apple awards are aimed at giving recognition to local authorities that have played a role in preserving the country's architectural heritage.

Brentwood Council gained the award for the way it has restored a building of historical and social importance to active use.
