A man was today homeless after his flat was destroyed by fire.
The blaze, which raced through the second-floor property in Battleswick, Pitsea, at around 3.45pm on Friday, has left Steve Marchant with nothing but the clothes on his back.
Four engines, manned by more than 25 firefighters, went to the scene after 20 people dialled 999. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
