Colchester threw away a one goal lead to lose 2-1 against high-flying Crewe.
U's took the lead four minutes before the interval, Mick Stockwell finishing off a move started by Joe Keith.
But Crewe came back with Steve Jones scoring two in six minutes.
The first on 56 minutes was a crisply executed shot. Then he pounced on a mistake by Pat Baldwin to add the second.
Colchester were awarded a penalty five minutes later but Clayton Ince saved Keith's spot-kick brilliantly.
The match between Shrewsbury and Southend was postponed because of a frozen pitch.
